Robert the Devil/Robertus Diabolus
It was at the beginning of the 13th century that an anonymous person wrote a verse account of the story of Robert the Devil. It surely took up the elements of an oral tradition 1 . According to this legend, Duke Aubert’s wife, Indre, despairing of having a child, invoked Satan for this purpose. Thus, Robert the Devil was born. The child grew up and became a terror to his companions and to the country. Until the day when, as a teenager, his mother confessed to him of her diabolical origin.
Robert then changed his attitude. He left Normandy and to do penance , dedicated himself to absolute silence, pretended to be mad, following the advice of a hermit , sharing, to humiliate himself, his food with the dogs . In Rome or Byzantium , he was noticed by the emperor, who integrated him into his court. The exile distinguished himself in three battles against the Saracens and thus saved the Empire. The emperor offered him his daughter’s hand, but he refused, preferring to lead the life of a hermit.
Robert Johnson
A legend about a boy with a harmonica as his only friend and a guitar he was unable to play, a boy so fed up with his lonely life, he took his guitar to the intersection of Highways 49 (“The Blues Highway”) and 61 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to ask the Devil to fine-tune it and give him a way out of his misery.
The story takes us to the 1930s and the Deep South. Legend has it that Robert Johnson, the King of the Delta Blues and the very first rock star, did just such a thing. As a young man from Mississippi, aspiring to be humanity’s greatest ever guitar player, and desperate because he didn’t feel he was even close, Johnson apparently met Satan at a crossroad where he offered his soul in exchange for extraordinary talent, and ultimately an exit from his pitiful life.
