Babak 4 Opera Les Huguenot. Duet Raoul-Vallentine

This scene is generally judged the most gripping in the opera, and is accompanied by some of its most dramatic music.

An apartment in the hotel of the Count of Nevers in Paris, on the evening of.

Valentine is deeply unhappy at having been forced to marry the Count of Nevers.

She is in fact still in love with Raoul, of whom she never stops thinking.

But here is Raoul who has managed to break into the Nevers mansion without everyone knowing. He wishes to say goodbye to Valentine, but is interrupted by the return of her husband, her father and other Catholic lords. Terrified, Valentine manages to convince Raoul to hide behind a tapestry.

Saint-Bris explains to the entire assembly that he received the order from the king and Catherine de Medici to organize the massacre of all Protestants. Nevers, shocked by such a project, refused to join in and was immediately taken to a place of detention.

Saint-Bris gives his orders: a group of conspirators must go to Admiral de Coligny to kill him. Another must take position around the Hôtel de Nesle where there are several Protestant lords invited to a party in honor of Marguerite and Henri de Navarre. The tocsin of Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois will give the signal for the start of the massacre.

Three monks then enter and bless the swords and daggers of all the conspirators.

The conspirators brandish their weapons and swear to massacre all the Protestants who find themselves in their path. Everyone finally retires quietly.

Raoul, who heard everything, wants to go and warn his friends. He is stopped by Valentine who warns him that his death is certain if he does not stay with her.

Noticing that Raoul does not listen to him, Valentine ends up confessing to him that she loves him.

This confession upsets Raoul and plunges him into a loving ecstasy. Valentine, mad with anxiety, doesn’t know what to do to save the one she loves.

Suddenly the tocsin of Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois rang out. Raoul realizes that he has lost precious moments and runs to the window to see that the massacre has begun. Valentine in turn observes and faints at the sight of the first victims. Raoul says goodbye to the inanimate young woman who only comes to her senses to see Raoul disappear into the night.
